"The Time the Map Said 'Wait' — And How I Found the Right Coordinates for Local Dialect Building a language learning app for Kenyan and African languages meant grappling with the challenge of accurate geolocation for regional dialects. This article shares a specific moment during development when AI collaboration helped navigate a tricky mapping issue. I was deep into building the lesson structure for Local Dialect when I hit a roadblock. The app needed to display language-specific content based on the user's location — a feature that would help learners connect with their regional dialects. But the map wasn't behaving as expected. I tried using OpenStreetMap Nominatim to fetch location data, but the results were inconsistent. Some regions returned the wrong coordinates, and others didn’t return anything at all. I was stuck, unsure whether the issue was with the API, the way I was querying it, or something else entirely.
Claude suggested I test the query with more specific parameters, like including the language name in the search. That didn’t work, but it led me to consider whether the problem was the lack of localized data for certain dialects. The API was trained on global data, not the nuanced regional variations I was trying to map. I needed a different approach.
Codex then suggested using a fallback system — if the primary API failed, the app could use a secondary source or even a manually curated list of regions. That made sense. I created a backup list of known dialect regions with manually entered coordinates. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked well enough to get the app running. Later, I integrated a second geocoding service for redundancy and accuracy.
Eventually, the app was able to display the right lessons for the right regions — a small but meaningful win. It showed me that even when AI tools can’t deliver perfect answers, they can guide you to workarounds that still get the job done. That moment — when the map said 'wait' — was a reminder that building with AI is as much about persistence as it is about precision.
